Getting started
Which year levels is it for?
Years 3 to 8. Every year from 3 to 7 has its own maths and English lessons, each with a topic quiz and a question bank. There's also writing practice for Years 3 to 8, reading lessons, and NAPLAN-style practice tests for Years 3, 5 and 7. Selective entry and HAST prep are separate programmes.
Does it follow my state's curriculum?
Victorian families follow the Victorian Curriculum 2.0. Queensland and South Australian families follow the Australian Curriculum (Version 9). You choose your state when you set up your child.
What does a normal week look like?
You choose the study days and how many minutes each day. On a study day your child opens Today and sees one main task and a few short ones, and the plan stops when the time is used. Many families do four sessions of 20 to 30 minutes a week.
Do I need to sit with them?
Not usually. Lessons read aloud and explain as they go. Check the parent view once or twice a week to see what's going well and what needs help.
Can it replace a tutor?
It can be used on its own or alongside a tutor. Either way, the parent view shows what's been covered and where support is needed, which makes any tutor's time more useful.
Fees and your subscription
How much does it cost?
After 14 free days it's $49 a month for one child, or $499 a year. Each extra child costs less. The pricing page shows your family total. Prices are in Australian dollars.
Is the trial really free?
Yes. Every family gets 14 days free with no card needed. We email you before the trial ends, and nothing is charged unless you choose to subscribe.
How do I cancel?
Open the grown-ups area, go to Subscription and choose Cancel subscription. You keep access until the end of the period you've already paid for, and you won't be charged again.
Can I get a refund?
If you pay yearly and change your mind within 14 days, email us for a full refund. If something on our side has gone wrong, tell us and we'll make it right. The details are in our terms of use, and your rights under Australian Consumer Law always apply.
Can I add more children later?
Yes. Add a child from the grown-ups area at any time, up to four children on one family account. Each extra child costs less than the first.
Lessons, tests and marking
How is writing marked?
Writing is scored by our purpose-built writing marker, an intelligent marking engine powered by AI and built on robust marking guidelines, the published writing criteria and proven writing frameworks. It scores against the ten NAPLAN writing criteria for NAPLAN-style practice, and against our own selective entry rubric for selective entry and HAST writing. Your child gets clear next steps in seconds.
Are the practice scores official?
Practice scores, including NAPLAN-style, selective entry and HAST-style results, are estimates based on published marking criteria and patterns from previous years' tests. They aren't official results, and real results can differ.
Who chooses what my child learns?
Study Compass follows a curriculum map, and fixed rules pick the next step from your child's answers. Each activity shows why it's there. You can also change study days, minutes and focus subjects at any time.
What if my child is ahead, or behind?
The starting check skips what they already know, and the plan brings back what keeps going wrong.
How are maths and reading questions marked?
Automatically, against set answers. Your child sees the working straight away when an answer isn't right.
Accounts and signing in
Does my child need an email address?
No. You create a username and password for each child. Children sign in on the student sign-in screen and never need their own email.
My child forgot their password
On the student sign-in screen, press Forgot password. We email the parent a link, and you choose a new password for your child.
I forgot my own password
On the sign-in page, press Forgot password and we'll email you a link to set a new one.
Can we use it on a tablet?
Yes. Study Compass works in the web browser on computers, tablets and phones. A laptop or tablet with a keyboard is best for writing practice.
Privacy and safety
What do you know about my child?
A first name or nickname, their year level, the username you choose and the work they do here. Our privacy policy lists every item.
Are there ads or chat?
No ads, no public profiles, no chat between children and no leaderboards.
Where is our information stored?
Accounts and schoolwork are kept on servers in Sydney. Writing sent for marking is processed by our AI service in the United States, without your child's name.
How do I delete our data?
Email hello@studycompass.com.au from the address on your account and we'll delete your family's information within 30 days.
